Dagala Thousand Lake Trek is a 5 ½ days trek near Thimphu, to a large number of lovely high altitude lakes. The Trek is easy and most trekking days are short but there are some long steep climbs. It starts from Khoma (near Thimphu) and ends in Simtokha, Thimphu. The highest point is 4300 Meters.

Dagala Thousand Lake Trek Itinerary.

Day 01. Arrive at Paro: Upon arrival at Paro airport, received by representative  and transfer to the hotel.

After lunch,

  • Rimpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
  • Ta Dzong(National Museum)

Dinner and overnight at Tashi Namgay Resort or similar. www.tnr.bt

Optional activities you can choose:

  • Hike to Dzongdrakha Monastery.
  • Hike to Nunnery (Kila Goenpa).
  • Village walk.
  • Mountain biking around Paro valley.
  • Drive to Chelila pass to view Higher Himalayas bordering Tibet including Mt. Jumolhari.

Paro:

Day 02. Paro sightseeing – Thimphu (Altitude: 2320 m) (Distance: 54 km, 1 hr): After breakfast,

  • Excursion to Taktsang Monastery (The Tiger’s Nest).

After lunch,

  • Drive to the ruins of Drukgyel dzong
  • Kyichu Lhakhang.

In the evening, an hour drive to Thimphu. On the way,

  • View Tamchog Lhakhang.

Thimphu: 

Day 03. Khoma – Geynikha (2950 meters):  (14 Km, 4hrs), Walk through terraced Paddy fields and coniferous forests to the settlement of Geynikha (2950 meters). The route then descends to a chorten that marks a camping place along side a stream at 2800 meters.

Day 04. Geynikha  – Gur: Crossing a suspension bridge, the trail heads west for a while, then climbs steeply towards the south to a rock platform and a crest at 3200 meters. A further walk of about two hours leads to a camp in a forest clearing at 3290 meters.

Walking Distance 7 Km, 5hrs. Ascent 550 meters, Descent 210 meters.

Day 05. Gur – Labatamba: Camp near the lake at 4300 meters. Dinner and over night in Camp. Walking Distance: 12 Km, 5hrs, Ascent 1040 meters, Descent 110 meters

Day 06. Labatamba – Panka: Walking Distance 8 km, 6-7 hours, Ascent 260 meters, Descent 520 meters. Camp at 4000 meters.

Day 07. Panka – Talakha: Walking distance: 8 km, 6-7 hours, Ascent 180 meters, Descent 1100 meters, Camp at 3080 meters.

Day 08. Talakha – Chamgang – Thimphu: Walk downhill on a steep trail to Chamgang (2640 meters) from where the Vehicle will pick you up and drive to Thimphu.

After lunch, Rest and free to stroll in the town. Dinner and over night in Hotel Migmar or similar.www.hotelmigmar.com

Walking Distance: 6 Km, 3 Hrs, 440 meters descent.

Thimphu: 

Day 09. Thimphu Sightseeing: After breakfast, visit:

  • National Library
  • Painting School
  • National Institute of Traditional medicine.

After lunch, visit:

  • Simtokha Dzong
  • National Memorial Chorten
  • Handicrafts Emporium
  • Tashichho Dzong.

  • Hike to Phajoding/ Tango/Cheri Monastery.
  • Village walk to Kabisa
  • Mountain biking around Thimphu valley.

Thimphu: 

Day 10. Thimphu – Punakha – Wangdi (Altitude: 1310 m): (72 Km, 3 hours drive). After breakfast,

  • Drive to Punakha via Dochula pass.
  • Royal Botanical Park
  • Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

After Lunch,

  • Chimi Lhakhang also called the “Temple of Fertility” built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley also popularly known as “Devine Mad man” in 15th

Overnight in Punatshangchhu Cottages or similar.  www.punatshangchhucottages.bt

Optional Activities you can choose:

  • White water Rafting in Pho Chu/ Mo Chu.(6 -7 km stretch)
  • Visit to Talo Monastery.

Punakha: 

Day 11. Wangdi Phodrang – Thimphu (Altitude: 2320) (Distance: 72 km, 3 hrs): After breakfast, drive to Thimphu.

After lunch, visit:

  • Tallest statue of Buddha
  • Takin Preserve center
  • Changangkha Monastery
  • The Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

Thimphu: 

Day 12. Thimphu – Paro (Altitude: 2280 m) (Distance: 54 km, 1 hr): Departure: Early morning, drive to the airport and farewell.

THINGS TO BRING FOR A TREK IN BHUTAN
Personal clothing: strong normal clothing (according to season). Preferably cotton, even for summer, woolen clothing for the evening and winter.
For Trekking, one must bring :
• Strong comfortable trekking boots – water-resistant for the rainy period-June-August.
• Sunscreen
• Flash light
• Rain coat (especially for rainy period –June-August)
• Head gear/hat/cap; sun and rain protection
• Water pills – for extra caution in purifying stream; (boiled water is provided at all times during the trek)
• Aspirin – incase of altitude sickness
• Lots of socks
• Warm clothes
